Finished off the first layer on the cloak. After a few hours in the oven on low heat I got this result:
Heating up the figure in an oven really helps to get a nice matt finish, which is normally so difficult to achieve with oils. A few days of air drying are needed and I can enhance the contrast.

WIP
First a viking:
The body fixed in its painting block.
Next a knight hospitaller:
I've been working on this mini for a while now. It is the first time I use a complementary colour to shade (green to shade the red).
Then a fantasy piece by Andrea:
The cloak is my main goal for today, to finish with the basic shades and highlights painted. The metals are painted with MrColor from Gunze, It is the first time I use them.
So let's get started !!!
Vacation !!!!
I got two days off from work, which will be spent behind my desk. I will try to post pictures with my progress (or lack of) during these days.
So off I go.

Some pictures
The good Santa brought me some photo equipment and I wanted to share the first tryouts with it:
Two older minis which I posted before:
Then the good old brit. Yes I still need to finish him, I hope to do that this week.
They are much better then I was able to do with my shoebox. I still have to experiment with a lot of my camera settings and the Gimp functions.

Update: brit II and future miniatures
I hope this is one of the last WIP updates for this miniature, since it is starting to wear out on me.
Since my previous post I moved the mini to it's display base:
Then a lot of details where painted which was slow work, due to the drying time of oils (2 to 3 days between each layer and every surface has at least three layers in the highlights and shadows). Most evenings I could only spend half an hour on the mini, then it needed to dry again.
In the last picture you can see I added the cartridge pouch on the hip. The haversack with canteen is still drying and needs some more detailing. Some other details are left to do on the body.
Yesterday I painted the face and it was a blast. It did come out very nice :
I never painted a face in oils this well. In the next few days I will work some more on the contrasts. And the hat needs some more work too of course.
Next pictures show what is on my workbench. Yes, new historical miniatures in 54mm scale to paint with oils. I decided to start 3 miniatures at the same time to avoid the short painting sessions while doing details on one mini.
These three are each in different stages of cleanup and groundwork (base) planning.
